In the box

Overview

This is the frame under the Ripcord R1 and R3, sold without the drivetrain. Same tube, same welds, same geometry, same 250 lb rating.

Two versions at the same price. Pre-drilled carries the motor mount pattern for our 48V and 72V drive kits, with chain alignment already set, which is the no-fabrication route. Blank has no mount holes, for builders fitting another manufacturer’s motor or designing their own mount.

What you are buying

1.5 mm wall mild steel tube. Not 1.0 mm. The step sounds small and is not, because resistance to deflection rises much faster than wall thickness. 1.0 mm frames flex enough under an adult to change the geometry mid-corner and then fatigue at the welds.

Continuous TIG welds at load-bearing joints. Not spot welds at the corners, which concentrate stress at a few points, and those points are where cracks start.

A gusseted rear axle mount. This joint takes the full lateral load every time the rear steps out, hundreds of times a session, with reversals. It is where drift kart frames crack, and a gusset spreads the load into the surrounding structure instead of concentrating it at the tube junction. It is the clearest single sign that a frame was designed by someone who understood what drifting does.

Steering lock for real counter-steer. More than a grip kart needs. Running out of lock mid-slide means spinning, and there is no cheap fix afterwards. This is the spec builders discover too late.

Slightly forward weight bias, keeping the front planted while the rear rotates. A rearward bias makes rotation easy to start and hard to catch, which is the wrong way round for learning.

What it needs to become a kart

Chassis plus drive kit plus sleeves is about $1,400, against $1,295 for a complete R1. Building is not primarily a saving at this level. It is a machine you specified, understand and can repair, with an upgrade path a sealed consumer kart does not have.

Building on it

Decide system voltage and rated capacity before buying anything else, because those two decisions determine motor, controller, pack, wiring gauge and connectors. Builders who buy a motor on offer and work backwards end up with a mismatched system.

If you are fabricating a mount, use 5 to 6 mm steel plate drilled for your motor pattern, with the holes slotted in the direction of chain pull so you can set tension by sliding the motor rather than fitting a separate tensioner. Check that motor and axle sprockets sit in the same plane with a straightedge. Misalignment throws chains and is the most common first-build fault after controller sizing.

What is included?

A complete rolling frame: steering, front wheels, rear axle and wheels, mechanical disc brake and an adjustable seat. No motor, controller, battery or charger.

Do I need to weld anything?

Not with the pre-drilled version and our drive kit. Fitting another manufacturer's motor usually means making a mount plate, which can be bolted rather than welded.

Will another brand's motor fit?

Usually, with a mount plate you make. Check shaft diameter, keyway width and chain pitch first. Bolt patterns are not standard across manufacturers.

Can I make this an off-road kart?

Not really. Ride height and the absence of suspension travel are set for sealed surfaces. Off-road needs a different chassis, which is the Torque T2.

Does it come with slide sleeves?

No, they are $59 separately. That is deliberate, since some builders fit grip wheels instead.
