The range

Two families, sharing a parts bin.

The Cadet line is for riders up to 130 lb, on 24V and 36V systems, at 8 and 14 mph. Not scaled-down adult karts: seat position, steering ratio and pedal reach are set for a smaller body, and both have a physical three-mode limiter a parent sets.

The Ripcord line is adult-rated to 250 lb, on 48V and 72V, at 25 and 40 mph. The Torque T2 shares the Ripcord rating but runs knobby tires and suspension travel for loose ground.

Chargers, sleeve sizing and most fasteners carry across both families, so moving up replaces the kart rather than everything around it.

How to choose in three questions

How heavy is the rider? This overrules everything else. Under 110 lb the Cadet 24 works. Under 130 lb the Cadet 36. Above that, an adult kart, no exceptions. Riding over the rated capacity flexes the frame, drops ground clearance and puts the motor into continuous high current, and it voids the warranty.

What is under your wheels? Smooth and sealed means a standard drift setup on polymer sleeves. Loose means the Torque T2 with knobby tires, which is a different machine rather than a different tire.

How much space? The usable minimum for an adult kart is roughly 40 by 60 feet of continuous smooth surface. Under that, buy less speed rather than more. A 25 mph kart you use fully is more fun than a 40 mph kart you never open up.

What every kart here has

• 1.5 mm wall steel tube, TIG welded continuously, with a gusseted rear axle mount. That joint is where drift karts crack, because it takes the full lateral load every time the rear steps out.
• A published rated rider capacity, in text on the product page.
• A serviceable battery pack with a standard XT90 connector, and a replacement listed at a real price.
• Replaceable polymer slide sleeves, five minutes to swap, $59 a set.
• A mechanical brake, not regenerative braking alone.
• An adjustable seat.
• Spare parts listed individually: controllers, throttles, hubs, chargers and packs.

Adult or kids

Go to adult drift karts if the rider is over 130 lb or over about 16. Three karts, all rated to 250 lb, from $1,295.

Go to kids and teen drift karts if the rider is a child or a teen under 130 lb. Two karts, from $349, both with a parent limiter.

If you are between the two, weight decides rather than age. A tall 14 year old at 140 lb belongs on an adult kart. A light 17 year old at 120 lb is fine on a Cadet 36 and will outgrow it.

Not sure drifting is what you want

Every model here can be fitted with grip wheels instead of slide sleeves, which turns it into a straightforward electric go-kart. That is worth knowing if the kart is shared between someone who wants to slide and someone who wants to race around cones.
